“I look forward to reconnecting soon, refreshed and re-energized, ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities.”

With these words, Wydad Casablanca mentor Rulani Mokwena has stepped away from social media amid the tough times he’s facing at the Moroccan club.

Wydad supporters appear to be divided on Mokwena. In one corner, they’ve been calling for his head, and in the other, the cool heads believe he needs more time to bring silverware to the trophy cabinet of the 22-time Moroccan champions.

The 38-year-old set foot in Casablanca in July last year to start his duties on a three-year contract, and with Wydad third on the Botola log—five matches before their league draws to a close and having lost the title to RS Berkane—some supporters aren’t pleased.

Not everyone has turned their backs on him, though. Most importantly, he still enjoys the backing of Wydad president, Hicham Ait Menna, who has insisted that “Achraf” – Mokwena’s Arabic name given by Wydad supporters, is the right man for the job.

Wydad has made it to the quarter-finals of the Excellence Cup, while they also have the Throne Cup to play for.

Especially on social media, Wydad supporters have registered their discontent criticizing the playing style too, and Mokwena, who on Instagram, has faced the backlash, which may have led to the decision to keep a low profile.

“Dear friends, I hope this message finds you well and in blessed spirits. I wanted to take a moment to share some personal reflections and inform you of an important decision I’ve made,” posted Mokwena on Instagram stories.

“In the coming weeks, I will be stepping away from social media to embark on a period of digital detox and reflection. This time away will not only serve as a mental and spiritual rejuvenation but will also allow me to focus wholeheartedly on the final sprint of my current endeavors. Disconnecting from the digital world, even briefly, can offer profound benefits to one’s mental clarity and emotional well-being, fostering a deeper connection with oneself and the world around us,” Mokwena continued.

He added, “Please know that this decision comes from a place of gratitude and humility. I’m incredibly thankful for all the love, support, and positive energy that you have continuously extended towards me. Your encouragement has been a source of strength, and I carry it with me as I undertake this journey towards greater mindfulness and focus.

“Though I’ll temporarily be unable to engage with you online, please understand that my appreciation for your support remains boundless. I look forward to reconnecting soon, refreshed and re-energized, ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities. Thank you once again for your understanding and unwavering support. With sincere gratitude, Rulani Mokwena.”

As things stand, Mokwena is expected to lead Wydad in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 to be hosted by the USA from June 15 to July 13.
