Since the launch of the Visiting Physician Programme in Abu Dhabi in 2021, aimed at treating rare and complex medical cases, 3,277 patients have received assistance from leading global specialists. This was reported by the emirate’s Department of Health, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative, implemented by the Abu Dhabi authorities, involves attracting highly qualified doctors from around the world to provide consultations and innovative medical services.

It is noted that in 2024, 37 specialists visited the emirate and performed 372 surgeries. They worked closely with local medical professionals, exchanging knowledge, expertise, and advanced techniques in complex medical fields.

In November 2024, selective dorsal rhizotomy – a surgical procedure to reduce spasticity (muscle stiffness) in cerebral palsy – was performed in Abu Dhabi for the first time.

Last year, visiting specialists worked in five key areas: paediatric haematology (bone marrow transplantation), plastic surgery (treatment of lymphoedema and brachial plexus disorders), adult orthopaedics (complex surgeries on the ankle, foot, shoulder, hand, and scoliosis correction), paediatric orthopaedics (limb lengthening and deformity correction), and ophthalmology.
