South Africa’s railway infrastructure is taking a significant leap forward as the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) announced the restoration of 31 out of 40 priority rail corridors.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa made the announcement during Transport Month, underscoring the pivotal role railways play in the country’s transport network and economic development.

This project is a major focus for the National Logistics Crisis Committee (NLCC), which is addressing vital issues, including enhancing the transport of goods through critical railway corridors to strategic ports. This is reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

Looking ahead, the South African government has set a target for the country’s railways to transport at least 250 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2029. This goal aligns with the newly established National Railway Masterplan, a comprehensive blueprint that will shape the future of South African rail.

These objectives call for substantial investments in infrastructure, rolling stock, and signage systems, along with advanced technology applications such as artificial intelligence for cargo tracking, ticketing, and critical infrastructure protection. All of these aspects are part of the project.
