The recent resignation of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu is a cause for concern, sparking worries about the party’s future and its potential impact on African unity and Pan-Africanism in South Africa. 

My concern is that Shivambu’s departure may not only weaken the EFF but also hinder efforts toward unity at a crucial time for the country and the continent. This country cannot afford to have a destabilized EFF. The party’s presence and participation in the political landscape provides an opportunity for the expression of diverse perspectives and the constructive exchange of ideas.

The EFF has been a passionate advocate for economic empowerment and self-reliance in African nations. A weakened EFF will diminish the African voice. South Africa is currently grappling with xenophobic undertones and racism, making the need for unity more critical than ever. The departure of a prominent leader like Shivambu could further strengthen the right-wing forces that have already gained influence in the political landscape through the so-called Government of National Unity (GNU).

A prominent voice of reason within the EFF, his influence was clearly felt in the political arena. Throughout his tenure with the EFF, Shivambu has been a vocal proponent of Pan-Africanism, advocating for greater cooperation among African nations and emphasizing the need for collective action to address the challenges facing the continent. His departure represents a significant loss for the party and prompts questions about its future direction.

The EFF has been a key player in advocating for social and economic justice, and its role in promoting African unity cannot be overstated. The concept of African unity holds immense significance in the context of South Africa and the broader African continent. African unity encapsulates the idea of solidarity among African countries and people, working together to address common challenges and pursue shared opportunities. It emphasizes the recognition of a collective African identity and the promotion of mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation among nations.

In the context of South Africa, embracing African unity is crucial for fostering positive relationships with neighbouring countries who during apartheid, took our struggle upon themselves . By aligning with the principles of Pan-Africanism, South Africa can leverage its influence to advocate for inclusive policies, economic development, and social justice across the continent.

Furthermore, African unity plays a pivotal role in addressing pressing issues such as xenophobia, racism, and economic inequalities. Emphasizing unity and solidarity can help to diminish divisive narratives and promote a sense of shared purpose and belonging among diverse African communities.

On the other hand, perhaps this whole debacle will spark robust debates on the issues of corruption and how detrimental it can be to a political career.
