Royal AM will no longer be a part of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as of next week.
The troubled KwaZulu-Natal club has not played a match this year after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) took control of it due to the club president Shauwn Mkhize’s R40-million debt to SARS.
SARS put the club up for auction, but there’s been no buyer for the club, and the PSL has had enough.
The PSL’s executive committee has informed its member clubs that Royal AM’s membership should be canceled because the club has failed to “fulfill its obligations to the league.”
On Thursday, 10 April, the Board of Governors, which is made up of all member clubs, would be expected to ratify the decision of the PSL’s executive committee.
In its communication to the member clubs, the executive committee has stated that “Royal AM misrepresented material information to the league in its application for renewal submitted on 1 July 2024… Royal AM transferred shares contrary to the provisions of article 14.6 of the NSL constitution.”
The 2024/25 season is then expected to finish with 15 teams, with the team placed 15th set for the PSL Promotion PlayOffs against teams in positions two and three in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, otherwise the second tier of South African football.
The top team in the Motsepe Foundation Championship wins automatic promotion to the elite league.
