Since taking over the BRICS chairmanship in January 2024, the bloc has grown by an additional 5 member states, namely Saudia Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

More than 30 other countries, including Malaysia, Columbia, Nigeria, Senegal, Algeria, and South Sudan have expressed interest in joining the bloc this year.

The BRICS bloc represents 45% of the world population and accounts for 45% of global crude oil production. In 2018, the bloc surpassed the G7 share of the world total gross domestic product (GDP) in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) and currently accounts for more than 35% compared to 30% by the G7.

The addition of new member states in 2024 could see the bloc becoming a world superpower and completely overwhelming the G7 in the foreseeable future.
