The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party has reinforced its parliamentary forces by bringing in former City of Joburg Speaker Colleen Makhubele and energy expert Crown Prince Adil Nchabeleng as its new Members of Parliament (MP).

The party announced their appointment late on Wednesday (January 22) and outlined its expectations from them as they assume their new roles.

Former President Jacob Zuma’s party won more than 50 seats in the May 29 2023 general elections.

They join a growing list of prominent South Africans who joined the MKP caucus, including former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe and former Passenger Rail of South Africa (Prasa) CEO Lucky Montana.

The caucus is led by former Western Cape Judge President Dr John Hlophe, who is also MKP deputy president.

“The MK Party has high expectations for these leaders as they embark on their parliamentary journey and we wish them well. Both are tasked with advancing the MK Party’s vision of radical socio-economic transformation, prioritizing policies that address land expropriation without compensation, youth empowerment, and energy security.

“Their presence in Parliament will amplify the voices of the marginalized, ensuring the MK Party remains a formidable force for justice and economic freedom,” the MKP said in a statement.

Makhubele, an MBA holder, among many other qualifications, is the former leader of the South African Rainbow Alliance (SARA) and ex-COPE member. She collapsed her party in August last year and joined the MK Party, which later tasked her with leading its women’s structure.

“Her memberships in the Institute of Directors South Africa and the HCL Foundation Trust further highlight her dedication to ethical governance and public service. Her proven track record aligns seamlessly with the MK Party’s vision of people-centred development and transformative change,” the party said about Makhubele.

The MKP said Nchabeleng embodied a dynamic blend of heritage and modernity as a prince of the Pedi tribe and a leading energy expert. It said he has demonstrated excellence in multiple fields, including project management, ICT entrepreneurship, investment banking, and as the head of lobby group Transform RSA.

“His active role in the MK Party’s National High Command and Economic Transformation Committee positions him as a champion for socio-economic reforms and sustainable development.

“His insights and expertise will be instrumental in shaping a prosperous and equitable future for South Africa,” added the MKP.
