The Premier Soccer League’s longest-serving coach, Gavin Hunt, is now unemployed, as SuperSport United has sacked him.
Matsatsantsa a Pitoli are battling in 15th place with nine matches remaining, and to save their season, the club’s board decided on Thursday to show Hunt the exit door.
The 60-year-old Hunt has been around the block since 1998 and was recently honoured for reaching 1,000 PSL games in his coaching career.
However, his vast experience has done little, if anything at all, to push SuperSport United to the safe spots, and the Tshwane club has deemed him surplus to requirements, as first reported by Sunday World.
From the start of the season, it was clear Hunt was not happy with his team, taking a jibe at management for not opening the chequebook.
“It’s very difficult when the exit door (for players) is open; it is what it is. I mean, they (management) explained to me when I came back three years ago that they hadn’t been in the top four in the 10 years that I wasn’t here,” Hunt said in October last year.
“The season before last, we came third on the log, and last season, we finished seventh by one point from fourth to go back to (CAF Interclub competitions) after having to travel like we did, playing all the kids from DStv Diski Challenge—DDC. So we suffered, but hey, give me the chequebook, and I’ll show you how to win the league.”
It wasn’t to be. Instead, SuperSport United has sunk to new lows and will have to dig deep to avoid relegation.
SuperSport United officially confirmed Hunt’s departure on Friday morning.
“The board and management of the club have expressed their appreciation to Hunt for the work he has done as head coach over many years. We remain convinced that Gavin still has much to contribute to South African and African football given his extensive knowledge and experience. We will always remain grateful for the impact he has had on the club and South African football.
“Andre Arendse will serve as an interim head coach with goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson as his assistant.”
