In 2024, I had the honour of being part of a special invitation program for exchange and cooperation between South Korea and Africa. I visited Seoul, South Korea, just ahead of the highly anticipated Korea-Africa Summit which took place in June 2024. During this immersive trip, I explored Seoul’s cutting-edge innovations, rich cultural heritage, and strong diplomatic ties with Africa, while also reflecting on the connections between South Korea and  Zambia.

The DMZ: A Powerful Glimpse into the Divided Peninsula

One of the most profound experiences of my visit was touring the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a poignant reminder of the divided nature of the Korean Peninsula. Standing at the border between North and South Korea, I was struck by the historical weight of the region, where decades of tension have given way to hopes for peace. As a visitor from Zambia, a country with a history of peace and political stability, it was a humbling experience to witness firsthand the complexities of the Korean conflict.

What made the visit particularly meaningful was learning about the ongoing efforts for reconciliation, not just through politics but through environmental preservation, as the area has become a sanctuary for wildlife. While Zambia has its own challenges, including economic development, it also has a proud history of promoting peace and unity in Africa—a sentiment echoed in South Korea’s aspirations for peace on the Peninsula.

Hyundai Motor Studios: A Showcase of Innovation and Future Mobility

Seoul is a global hub of innovation, and my visit to Hyundai Motor Studios offered a glimpse into South Korea’s forward-thinking approach to technology and mobility. I was fascinated by how Hyundai is shaping the future of transportation through electric vehicles and cutting-edge AI technology. The exhibition showcased the company’s commitment to sustainability, which mirrors Zambia’s own growing focus on renewable energy and environmental conservation.

The space itself was stunning, with interactive displays highlighting Hyundai’s role in the global push toward greener, smarter transportation. It was clear to me that the South Korean commitment to technological advancement could serve as a model for African countries, including Zambia, in our efforts to leapfrog traditional industries and embrace more sustainable futures.

Taekwondo Headquarters: South Korea’s Martial Legacy

No trip to South Korea is complete without experiencing Taekwondo, and a visit to the Taekwondo Headquarters provided an unforgettable experience. I was honoured to witness live demonstrations of this martial art, which is deeply ingrained in South Korea’s cultural identity.

While Zambia may not have a martial arts tradition as embedded in the national culture as Taekwondo is in Korea, there are similarities in the discipline and respect found in both countries. Zambia’s strong sporting culture, from football to athletics, shares a common thread with Taekwondo’s focus on respect, perseverance, and unity. The way South Korea has turned Taekwondo into an international ambassador for its culture was an inspiring reminder of the power of sports to unite nations and promote cultural exchange.

A Taste of Tradition: Famous Chicken Soup Restaurant

Korean cuisine is known for its bold flavours and healthy ingredients, and one of the most memorable meals I had during my visit was at a renowned chicken soup restaurant, famous for its Samgyetang—a hearty soup made with ginseng, chicken, and medicinal herbs. As someone from Zambia, where food is an integral part of social life, I found the cultural significance of food in South Korea particularly interesting. Samgyetang is not just a meal; it’s seen as a nourishing food that promotes vitality, especially during the hot summer months, and I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the traditional Zambian foods, which also emphasize nourishment and community.

Korail: Exploring South Korea by Train

One of the highlights of my trip was experiencing South Korea’s advanced transportation system with Korail, the national railway operator. The efficiency and speed of the KTX (Korea Train Express) trains were impressive, offering a seamless and fast way to travel across the country. In Zambia, while we have the Zambia Railways network, the experience of riding the KTX was a reminder of the progress South Korea has made in modernizing its infrastructure.

This journey also sparked thoughts on the potential for African nations, including Zambia, to invest in rail infrastructure to connect rural areas with urban centres and promote regional economic integration. The KTX system is a prime example of how investment in high-speed rail can elevate a nation’s connectivity and contribute to economic growth.

Lotte Tower VIP Tour: A View of the Future

A visit to Lotte Tower, the tallest building in South Korea, provided another unforgettable experience. The VIP tour took us to the observation deck, where we were treated to panoramic views of the sprawling city below. Standing at such a height, I was reminded of South Korea’s meteoric rise as an economic powerhouse, driven by a combination of innovation, education, and an unwavering commitment to development.

For a visitor from Zambia, a country still undergoing significant development, this experience was eye-opening. It reinforced the importance of long-term vision and strategic investments in infrastructure and education. While South Korea has transformed its landscape in a few decades, Zambia, too, can leverage its natural resources and human capital for similar growth, with the right policies and investments.

Han River Yacht Tour: Experiencing Seoul’s Natural Beauty

After a day of exploring the city, I embarked on a serene yacht tour along the Han River, a central feature of Seoul’s urban landscape. The river is not only a source of life but also a symbol of how South Koreans have integrated nature into their modern city life. In Zambia, our rivers, like the Zambezi, have been central to our culture, economy, and tourism. This comparison highlighted the potential of Zambia’s rivers to contribute to both national identity and economic prosperity, similar to how the Han River serves as a vital resource for Seoul.

Global Knowledge Centre: Bridging Global Challenges

The visit to the Global Knowledge Centre highlighted South Korea’s dedication to knowledge sharing and addressing global challenges, including sustainable development, climate change, and digital innovation. As Zambia faces its own set of challenges, particularly in terms of poverty reduction and climate resilience, it was inspiring to see how South Korea’s emphasis on knowledge-based development can offer valuable lessons for African nations.

Seoul, a City of Contrasts, A Nation of Promise

My visit to Seoul in 2024, was an eye-opening exploration of a city that blends the old and the new, the traditional and the futuristic. From the DMZ to the Hyundai Motor Studios, from the Lotte Tower to the Han River Yacht tour, I experienced the incredible contrast between South Korea’s history and its current standing as a global leader. As a visitor from Zambia, I found much to admire in South Korea’s transformation and its unwavering commitment to progress.

The exchange program provided valuable insights into the shared potential for collaboration between Korea and Africa. As both regions look to the future, there are countless opportunities for cooperation, particularly in the areas of technology, infrastructure, education, and healthcare. Seoul left me not only with admiration for its achievements but also with a renewed sense of hope for the future of both South Korea and Zambia.
