One of the suspects who was allegedly involved in the dramatic and brazen cash in transit (CIT) heist along the N2 in Durban on Tuesday morning has been shot dead by the police.

The suspect was killed during a gunbattle with the police in the suburb of Glenwood, some 10 kilometers away from the crime scene.

According to the police in KwaZulu-Natal, they followed up information regarding the vehicles which were spotted fleeing from the cash in transit robbery crime scene.

“The identified vehicle was intercepted at an intersection in Glenwood and the suspects opened fire towards the police.

“Police retaliated and during the shootout, one suspect was shot and fatally wounded and the other one was rushed to hospital with gunshot injuries. No police officer was injured during the shootout,” the KwaZulu-Natal police said.

It appears that the suspects are career criminals as the police said they have also been positively linked with the triple murder case which happened at the Ntambanana policing precinct in January 2025.
They have also been linked to another double murder case committed in June 2024 in the same area.

With regards to this morning’s (February 4) cash in transit robbery, police added, another vehicle which was hijacked at KwaMakhutha area and used in the robbery has just been found abandoned in Mariannhill, with what looked to be money bags inside.

During the brazen robbery, the suspects shot and killed a woman who was walking on the side of the road. They also injured the security guards who were in the cash transporting van and took their firearms.

Moreover, the armed group shot and injured five bystanders including a taxi driver whom they wanted to hijack and use his minibus as a gateway car.
