The ANC’s Peter Mokaba region in Limpopo is set to be postponed after some branches failed to hold their branch general meetings (BGM) to nominate conference delegates.
The regional conference, scheduled for April 25-27, was billed to elect a new leadership that would lead the party’s 2026 Local Government Elections campaign.
The ANC’s regional task team (RTT) spokesman Adolph Rapetswa confirmed to African Times that the conference is likely to experience another delay, due to BGMs extensions.
“The regional leadership is meeting on Sunday,30 March 2025, with a possibility of extending BGM timelines which may affect the conference dates, we will await the outcomes of the RTT meeting” Rapetswa said.
He couldn’t confirm the number of branches that have already sat for the general meetings.
Peter Mokaba is one of the biggest ANC regions in Limpopo, with 122 branches.
The region, which includes the City of Polokwane, is nothing short of a fierce contest, as Polokwane executive mayor John Mpe is once more vying for the party’s plum job as regional chair.
Mpe is facing a challenge from Mamedupi Teffo, the provincial chairperson of the Limpopo Women’s League.
The ANC Limpopo regional elective conferences in Peter Mokaba, Norman Mashabane, Vhembe and Sekhukhune regions have been marred by delays since last year due to the party’s membership portal issues.
This has triggered an intervention by Luthuli House, the governing party’s headquarters in Johannesburg.
In a letter sent to the provinces, ANC General Secretary Fikile Mbalula announced that all conferences should halt until members go through the party’s political education foundation course.
“This serves to reiterate the importance of all structures to undergo the foundation course as part of the organisational renewal agenda. This means no structure must convene conferences unless they have undergone the foundation course.”
“The foundation course seeks, through capable cadreship among all members and leaders, to build strong organisational structures geared towards implementing organisational programmes that would fulfil the aims and objectives of the national democratic revolution,” Mbalula wrote.
ANC regions across the province are said to have already started rolling out the course.
However, the jury is still out on whether Norman Mashabane (Mopani) would be ready to hold its conference by next weekend.
