In a strategic move to broaden its global presence, Mozambique flagship carrier Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), has embarked on a new chapter by introducing two additional routes between Maputo and Cape Town in South Africa, and Maputo and Lisbon in Portugal.
The first route promises to open up fresh travel possibilities for passengers, linking the vibrant South African city of Cape Town with the dynamic tourist destination of Inhambane province that boasts pristine water beaches. The route is poised to facilitate business and leisure travel, catering to the diverse needs of passengers, especially South African tourists, who are the major travellers to Mozambique.
The second route, restarted 12 years after being suspended, aims to strengthen international connectivity by establishing a vital link between Lisbon and Maputo. This strategic expansion is expected to foster economic and cultural ties.
Mozambique’s Culture and Tourism Minister, Edelvina Materula, said it was remarkable that the airline launched simultaneously two new routes, adding it “reaffirms Maputo as a gateway for international tourists, expanding the possibilities of increasing the influx from Mozambique’s biggest tourists provider, which is South Africa, in a time were around 70% tourists hail from this country”.
“Mozambique registered 1.3 million tourist entries in the first half of the current year, compared to 130.482 in the same period the previous year, which represents a more than 100% increase.
“Of the tourists registered, 642.129 were locals and 612.526 foreigners”, which proves that tourism is a strategic asset to generate revenue, employment and economic growth,” Materula said.
“Revenue from tourism in the first half of 2023 was around 83 million dollars, against 72 million in the same period of 2022.”
Speaking at the launch ceremony held at the Cape Town International Airport on December 16, 2023, LAM’s Commercial Director, Firmino Naftal said the move marked a significant milestone for the carrier “as we expand our network to meet the growing demand for convenient and efficient travel options in the region”.
“The Maputo-Cape town route has immense potential, and we are excited to contribute to its development by providing ⁰ service and seamless travel experiences to our passengers. Passengers can look forward to a seamless travel experience aboard LAM’s modern fleet, ensuring comfort and convenience throughout their journey. The introduction of these new routes reflects the airline’s dedication to meeting the evolving demands of the market and providing travellers with an extensive array of destinations to explore.
“The new route will benefit not only business travellers but also leisure seekers, who will have the opportunity to explore the diverse attractions and cultural heritage of both nations and connect to our 12 domestic locations as well,” Naftal added.
As the aviation industry continues to recover, the Mozambican carrier aims to stand out as a dynamic player, poised to capture new opportunities and contribute to the revival of global air travel. The success of these new routes is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the airline’s future trajectory in its quest for sustainability after years of financial woes.
“We are also delighted to announce the simultaneous launch of the Maputo-Lisbon route, which aligns with the Cape Town connections.”
He said the routes would be the gateway for the multicultural Capetonian passengers.
