The reigning PSL champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, are 15 points clear at the top and on course to retain their league title, but the team’s head coach, Miguel Cardoso, is unhappy.
The Brazilians have accumulated 51 points from 19 outings after Wednesday’s 4-2 win against Sekhukhune United in Polokwane, Limpopo.
According to Opta Jabu, who record Premier Soccer League (PSL) statistics, “Sundowns have become the fastest team in PSL history to reach 50 points in a top-flight season, doing so in 19 games and breaking the record they previously set (20 games in 2022/23 & 2023/24).”
Orlando Pirates are second with 36 points and have four matches in hand. The Buccaneers recently had to contend with a postponed match against Golden Arrows because of a waterlogged pitch.
In February, Sundowns have played eight matches across all competitions. Usually, the Tshwane team plays a match every third day, and Cardoso is having a hard time trying to understand the schedule.
“I can only repeat it; it’s absolutely insane what’s happening to Sundowns,” he told the media.
“The schedule is insane; it’s not normal. It doesn’t respect the human being, and I think it should be fought and well-considered because I don’t know how it’s possible. But we keep alive, we struggle, and we continue pushing forward for sure.”
On Saturday, Sundowns will host Kaizer Chiefs at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.
