The University of South Africa (UNISA) and the North West Department of Education are collaborating on a pilot program to empower high school learners to make informed career choices as early as Grade 9.
This initiative was discussed during a meeting convened by the North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, with senior management of the North West Department of Education and representatives from UNISA, led by the President of the UNISA Convocation, Justice Dabampe, on November 19.
In a media statement, the department emphasized that the proposed program is part of UNISA’s broader strategy to enhance career readiness among learners. It aims to align their talents, interests, and aspirations with future career opportunities while supporting the department’s efforts to integrate career guidance into the life sciences curriculum.
According to the statement, MEC Motsumi expressed her optimism about the collaboration.
“This partnership is a step forward in shaping the futures of our learners by giving them the tools and support needed to make well-informed career decisions. We hope that these engagements bear fruit in a way that will address career readiness challenges and strengthen our education system”, said Motsumi.
The program reflects UNISA’s commitment to addressing societal challenges through innovative educational strategies.
Meanwhile, UNISA is expected to host the 2024 Prestigious Chancellor’s Calabash Awards on Friday, November 22, at the Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg.
This annual event, introduced in 2007, recognizes the exceptional achievements of UNISA alumni and other South Africans who have contributed significantly to society.
This year, nine outstanding individuals are expected to be honoured, including Justice Albie Sachs, Ruth First, Bishop Dr. Stanley Mmutlanyane Mogoba, and Archbishop Njongonkulu Ndungane for their roles in the fight against apartheid, oppression and injustice in South Africa.
Former Statistician General Dr. Pali Lehohla, Christine Ramon, Professor Tsietsi Winston Dennis Mohapi, Innocentia Itumeleng Motau and the Education, Training and Development Practices Sector Education and Training Authority (ETDP SETA) are also expected to be honoured for their excellence in their areas of expertise and contributions to societal development.
UNISA’s Chancellor and Former President of South Africa, Dr. Thabo Mbeki, will preside over the ceremony.
