Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sweilem met with UAE Ambassador to Cairo Mariam Khalifa Al Kaabi to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in the field of water resources development.
During the meeting, Sweilem emphasised the need for joint efforts in the Arab region, in finding innovative solutions to overcome water problems, including increasing the use of non-conventional sources.
The minister expressed Egypt’s readiness to cooperate with the UAE and transfer expertise in water purification and reuse. A delegation from the UAE is expected to visit new plants in the Delta to treat agricultural wastewater in the coming days.
The two sides also discussed opportunities for Emirati investments in Egypt and sharing experiences in water management, modern irrigation and desalination techniques using solar energy, which can help address water scarcity given the similar challenges facing both countries.
Sweilem emphasised the importance of applying the concept of water-food-energy nexus, especially since agriculture is the main consumer of water. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.
Egypt’s participation in the World Desalination Conference scheduled for December 2024 in the United Arab Emirates was also discussed.
