The provincial governments of Limpopo and Gauteng have taken a significant step forward in their plans for a high-speed rail network that will connect the two provinces. According to a joint media statement released on October 9th, 2024, Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi met at Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro in Mookgophong, Waterberg, where they approved the implementation protocol document for the project.

The two provinces also committed to joint consultations with key national bodies, including the Presidency, the Ministries of Finance, Transport, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), and Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), with the aim to secure high-level buy-in for the project.

The high-speed rail network, proposed in October 2023, is designed to link Johannesburg and Polokwane via a 240 km rail line, reducing travel time and fostering economic growth between the two regions.

To ensure smooth progress, the meeting initiated the process for nominating and appointing a Joint Project Manager. A Political Oversight Committee will also be appointed to oversee governance and ensure accountability throughout the project’s lifecycle.

“We are of the view that the economies of the two provinces are beginning to merge, and we must find ways of harnessing this growth. This is not a vision of one province; it is a joint vision that is driven from all angles. Together, we can create a seamless transport network that will benefit our citizens and businesses alike.” said Lesufi.

This project is part of a broader initiative to improve transport infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, and create stronger economic ties between urban Gauteng and rural Limpopo.

A recent feasibility study by the Limpopo government, titled “The case for rail in Limpopo province Passenger rail plan development” found that there is a need for the province to prioritize the rail networks given its economic growth points, social needs and development.

The realisation of this project will not only create jobs but will transform our cities with high-speed rail stations that will become dynamic hubs of economic activity, stimulating urban development and increasing property values. We are committed to making this vision a reality for the benefit of all our people.”

The media statement detailed that the high-speed train promises substantial commercial and economic benefits, including reduced travel times, improved trade routes, and accelerated regional development.

Upon completion, the project will position both Limpopo and Gauteng as pivotal economic hubs, facilitating seamless travel for businesses, commuters, and tourists.
