- Ethiopia’s Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) has announced the start of the pre-registration and verification phase for the Electronic Passport (E-passport)
To ensure international recognition of the E-passport, which Ethiopia plans to introduce next year, a consultancy was held with senior representatives of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The delegation led by Selamawit Dawit, the Director General of ICS, met with Juan Carlos Salazar, the Director General of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, to discuss the details of the implementation of the new passport.
During the meeting, Selamawit highlighted that Ethiopia has gained significant experience in the aviation sector and is home to Africa’s largest airline providing global connectivity. This is reported by Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), a partner of TV BRICS.
She thanked ICAO for its support in the area of travel document security and asked for various assistance, including training, to help Ethiopia transition to an e-passport system.
According to the information, preparations for Ethiopia’s transition to the E-passport system are nearing completion, with plans for implementation in the next Ethiopian year. The delegation also held consultations with representatives of relevant organisations to ensure that E-passport technology for border control meets ICAO standards. Similar consultations are also planned for the future.
