India’s Ministry of Coal reported a significant increase in the domestic production of the natural resource, leading to the decision of reducing coal imports to strengthen the country’s energy security and foster the growth of the sector. The information was reported by ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to a press release by the Ministry, the country’s coal production experienced a substantial increase of 11.65 per cent in the fiscal year 2023-24, reflecting the government’s commitment to achieving self-reliance. For the year of 2024-25, Indian higher authorities have set a goal to achieve 1,080 million tonnes of the fossil fuel, thus establishing India as a leading competitor in the global market.

Led by a recently implemented inter-ministerial committee, coal imports will be scaled down via inner discussions on how to coordinate directed measures among various ministries. The initiative aims at identifying and facilitating import substitution opportunities and streamlining export promotion.

These ambitious efforts are expected to positively contribute to India’s economic growth, generate revenue, create more employment opportunities in the segment and project the country as a key player in the global coal market.
