ANC Retains Limpopo Ward with Landslide Victory in By-election

The ANC has retained ward nine in the Makhado Local Municipality after a landslide victory in the low turnout by-election on Wednesday.

Despite a low voter turnout, the province’s ruling party retained the Makhado town ward with a 66.63%, after receiving 999 votes. 

The April 2 by-elections came after the death of ANC cllr Kanukani Maphubu in January this year, after a short illness.

ActionSA Vows  to Withhold Budget Support if  ANC Pushes VAT Increase

ActionSA, the kingmaker party that helped the ANC to pass the 2025-2026 budget without the support of its coalition partner the DA, says it would withhold its support if the VAT increase proposal is implemented from 1 May 2025. 

The party’s parliamentary leader,  Athol Trollip, says they still have the cards to block the move.

Two Limpopo ANC structures – the ANC Veterans League (ANCVL) and the ANC Youth League (ANCYL)  – have joined forces and demanded that loose tongued former MP Boy Mamabolo be sanctioned by the governing party. 

Their call comes after Mamabolo insulted and questioned the moral standing of ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Onnica Kwakwa, who is also the Department of Defence spokesperson.

The 2025 edition of the Hong Ting Forum took place on Wednesday in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, bringing together senior government officials, diplomats, scholars, industry executives and media practitioners to explore ways to advance China-Africa cooperation on modernization.

Hosted by Xinhua News Agency Africa Regional Bureau, the forum was held under the theme “China-Africa Dialogue on the Path to Modernization.”

Sundowns Defend their Supporters but Apologise to Espérance

Mamelodi Sundowns have called on Tunisian club Espérance to “denounce” the behavior of its supporters after the ugly scenes at Loftus Stadium.

Sundowns beat Espérance 1-0 at the Pretoria venue on Tuesday in a CAF Champions League quarter-finals first leg encounter, but their victory was marred by clashes between the supporters from both ends.

However, it’s evident in video footage that the Espérance section—believed to be around 600 traveling supporters—were the aggressors, throwing water bottles and even security gates.

Royal AM is Set to be Expelled from PSL

Royal AM will no longer be a part of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) as of next week.

The troubled KwaZulu-Natal club has not played a match this year after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) took control of it due to the club president Shauwn Mkhize’s R40-million debt to SARS.

SARS put the club up for auction, but there’s been no buyer for the club, and the PSL has had enough.

Budget Passed After Bitter Fight, Forcing DA to Decide Whether to Stay in the GNU or Leave

The contentious budget for the 2025-2026 period has been passed with 194 votes against 182 while its legality is still in question.

After it was passed ANC MPs were heard shouting “Abahambe” (they must leave), meaning the DA should leave the government of national unity (GNU) after opposing VAT increase.

The Gqeberha High Court in the Eastern Cape has found Nigerian televangelist, Timothy Omotoso not guilty of all the rape charges that were levelled against him.

Also found not guilty were Zukiswa Sitho and Lusanda Sulani who were co-accused in the high-profile case that involved alleged victims from KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
